How peels work

A controlled application of acids such as salicylic, lactic, glycolic, mandelic or TCA loosens the bonds between dead skin cells and speeds up cell turnover, revealing brighter, more refined skin.

Some peels are removed in clinic and others at home. Superficial peels need no preparation, while stronger ones may, depending on your skin and pigment type.

Everything you need to know

How chemical peels work

A peel is a controlled application of acids such as salicylic, lactic, glycolic, mandelic or TCA. They loosen the bonds between dead skin cells, speed up cell turnover and remove the outer layer of skin.

The result is fresher, more even and more refined skin, which helps with acne, pigmentation, fine lines and rough texture. Some peels are removed in clinic, while others stay on for up to 12 hours and are removed at home. We will always tell you which.

Superficial vs medium-depth peels

Superficial peels work on the top layer of skin and usually have no downtime. They are ideal as a course for glow, congestion and gradual brightening.

Medium-depth peels reach deeper and give a more noticeable change in pigmentation, texture and fine lines. Expect 3 to 7 days of flaking. We will recommend the right depth after looking at your skin.

Preparing your skin

Good preparation gives better, safer results, especially for pigmentation and darker skin tones. We may ask you to use specific skincare for a few weeks before your peel and to avoid certain actives just before treatment.

Most people need a course of 3 to 6 peels, 2 to 4 weeks apart, then seasonal maintenance.

Aftercare

  • Avoid retinoids and vitamin C for 3 to 7 days.
  • Avoid heat, saunas and steam until skin has settled.
  • Avoid exercise for 24 to 36 hours.
  • Do not pick peeling skin, as this can cause marks and pigmentation.
  • Apply SPF 50+ every day and reapply regularly.
